“Here, I Brought You This”. Why Your Dog Greets You With a Toy

If you've got a dog who sprints to find something the moment you walk through the door, you'll know exactly what I mean.

It doesn't matter how long you've been gone. Five minutes to put the bins out. Three hours at work. The result is the same - you open the door and they're already zooming off to find a toy, a sock, a random bit of cardboard, anything - and presenting it to you with the energy of someone who has been waiting their whole life for this moment.

Peanut (one of my two) does it every single time. And honestly, even knowing exactly why he does it, it still gets me every time too.

It's called displacement behaviour and it's actually a really healthy thing

When your dog sees you come home, they feel an enormous rush of emotion. Excitement, relief, joy - their whole nervous system lights up at once. But dogs can only hold so much feeling before it starts to overflow, and they need somewhere for it to go.

Grabbing something gives their mouth and their brain, something to do with all of that. Instead of jumping, barking, spinning in circles or nipping (all of which are also ways dogs try to manage big feelings), they channel it into finding and carrying something. It's self-regulation and it's a genuinely positive response.

What if my dog doesn't do this?

Completely normal - dogs manage their emotions in all sorts of ways, and not every dog is a natural carrier. Some bark or howl, some spin, jump, some just lean against your legs!

What they all have in common is that your dog is trying to manage a big moment and that's worth appreciating.

Why I think this stuff matters

I spend a lot of time watching dogs, on walks, during home visits, in those moments when they think no one's paying attention. The more you understand why they do what they do, the easier it becomes to read them, to support them, and just enjoy them more.

So next time your dog zooms off to find their favourite bear before you've even got your coat off, know that they're doing their very best to manage those big feelings. That's pretty special, if you ask me. 🧡
