Why Hiring a Private Dog Field Might Be the Best £10 You Ever Spend!

I'll be honest, the first time I heard about hiring a private dog field, I wasn't really sure if it might be a bit underwhelming!
And then I actually tried one. And now I genuinely think they're one of the most underrated things in dog ownership.
What even is a private dog field?
The basic idea is simple: a fully enclosed, secure space that's just yours for up to an hour. There are no other dogs or strangers appearing from nowhere. It's just you, your dog, and whatever they decide to do with all that freedom.
Some are literally just a field, grass, fence, gate. But some are quite a bit more than that, and Pool Dog Park near Pool in Wharfedale is a good example of that.
I took Dottie there recently. It's 1.5 acres, which is a lot of space, but it's also got agility equipment, tunnels, jumps, weaving poles, a sandpit, scent and search games and tyres. There's even a wash station when it all inevitably ends in muddy chaos. It's genuinely well thought out and not just a field with a latch on the gate.
Watching Dottie in there was one of those really nice moments. She's not the type of dog who just naturally relaxes in open spaces. She's alert, she notices things and she's usually got one eye on the horizon. But in there she just went off and did her own thing. Sniffed everything. Investigated the sandpit, posed for photos and had a good time.
So who actually could benefit from one?
The obvious answer is reactive dogs. If your dog has the tendency to lose the plot every time another dog appears on the horizon, off-lead time can feel basically impossible. A private field means your dog can actually run and zoom about and be a dog.
Dogs who are still learning recall, this is actually one of the best ways to practise it. There are no distractions you can't control, no moment where you call your dog back and they spot a squirrel and make a completely different choice. You can build that recall up properly, at your dog's pace, without the pressure of a public space. A place like Pool Dog Park has weaving poles and agility equipment too, which gives you something to actually do together rather than just standing in a field shouting their name.
Senior dogs or dogs recovering from surgery often can't manage big walks, but they still want to move and potter and sniff. A secure field lets them do exactly that, stretch their legs, investigate things, have a bit of freedom, without you having to drag them round a route that's too much for them.
Nervous or easily overwhelmed dogs - watching a dog who's usually on high alert in public suddenly realise there's nothing to worry about is really rewarding. You can almost see them decompress.
The bit nobody talks about! There's something in it for you too.
If you've got a dog who needs a lot of management on walks, the constant checking and scanning ahead, the U-turns, the "sorry, he's not great with other dogs" conversations can be really exhausting. And you don't always realise how exhausting until you're suddenly standing in a field where nothing needs managing, watching your dog enjoy themselves.
It's really nice, actually.
Can Dottie PAWS take your dog to a secure dog field?
Yes and this is something I'm genuinely pleased to offer, because for the right dog it can make a real difference. If your dog would benefit from safe off-lead time as part of their session with us, whether that's because they can't be let off the lead in public, because they need a quieter environment, or because they'd just love the chance to have a proper run, we can incorporate a private field visit into their outing.
If that sounds like exactly what your dog needs, just drop me a message and we can chat through what it might look like for them.
Want to visit Pool Dog Park yourself?
If you're local to the Wharfedale area, it's worth checking out. They're at Chapel Hill Road, Pool in Wharfedale, LS21 1QY. You can book directly at pooldogpark.co.uk. It genuinely is more than just an empty field, and if your dog is the type who needs safe off-lead space, it's well worth the trip.
I will also be trialling some other dog fields in the area, so watch this space.
