Why Walking a Sensitive or Reactive Dog Can Be So Exhausting

Owning a sensitive or reactive dog doesn’t just affect the dog, it affects the person holding the lead.
It feels like every walk requires planning. Choosing the right time - yep I'm often the one out at 6am!
Scanning the horizon for other dogs, runners, or people wearing an odd looking hat.
Watching body language constantly. Making decisions before situations unfold.
By the time you've changed your route for the tenth time to dodge a possible incident, it ends up not just being a walk, but emotionally exhausting.
Many owners don’t talk about how tiring this can be. There’s often a quiet sense that they should be able to manage, or that asking for help is somehow a failure. In reality, walking a dog who finds the world overwhelming takes awareness, restraint, patience and resilience - every day!
Even when things go well, it can be draining. And when they don’t, it can knock your confidence completely.
What often gets overlooked is that dogs are very good at picking up on how their people are feeling. If an owner is tense, braced for something to go wrong, or emotionally worn down, dogs can sense that too. It becomes a cycle which is of course nobody’s fault, just reality.
This is where thoughtful support can make a real difference.
Sharing the responsibility doesn’t mean stepping back permanently. It means giving yourself permission to rest occasionally. Being able to hand the lead to someone who understands your dog’s needs, respects their limits, and doesn’t judge their behaviour.
At Dottie PAWS, Shared Care Walks exist for exactly this reason. It's not about taking over or changing your dog. We are here to offer a helping hand when you need one, giving both dog and owner a chance to reset.
